In this paper Madsen presents how the Great Recession in Europe has effected the unemployment benefits in Denmark, straining both active labour market policies as well as the public unemployment insurances - the two of the main pillars in the Danish "flexicurity" model. Madsen puts the implications of these changes in unemployment benefits this way: "Whether a new balance can be found – not too far from the old one – will depend on the political developments and the reactions of the trade unions over the coming years."
