Tax Cuts Aim to Boost Bank Competition
"The federal government will cut taxes to encourage competition among lenders and increase their level of deposits, moves it says will increase the strength of Australia's financial system. Smaller Australian financial institutions and locally based subsidiaries of overseas lenders will pay less interest withholding tax (IWT) on the funds they borrow offshore from 2013/14, allowing them to compete with the major banks on lending, the government said."
