Media Discourse on the 2002 Presidential Elections in Brazil
The 2002 presidential elections brought a new political group to power in Brazil, the left-wing labor-based PT, for the first time in history. Given the profound nature of political transformation in course under a democratic system, this paper examines the mechanisms of social resistance by the Brazilian elite. Using methods of semiotics, the media discourses, which ultimately create and manage social realities, are analyzed, more specifically, that of the most influential weekly magazine in Brazil, Veja.
