Expected future demographic and societal shifts have put the improvement of quality and efficiency of long-term-care systems on the agenda of every EU member state. Therefore, four groups of countries can be identified: Nordic countries, together with France and Germany, share highly developed systems and quite generous public funding. A country group with highly developed systems includes Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Slovakia, while less patient-friendly system characteristics can be found in Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania.
