The European Union Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in July 2011: "The European Union needs a maritime sector that is competitive at international level and hence allows, for that purpose, favourable taxation based on tonnage to prevent companies from relocating". Mr. Almunia's support of the tonnage tax principles is in line with the position of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport.
