Crime Coverage by Brazilian Media: an Agenda-Setting Influence of Selective News

"This study content analyzes crime stories in one of the largest and oldest newspapers in São Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo, focusing on the way it covers crime and violence, and whether that coverage reflects the reality of crime. This content analysis was then compared to a public opinion poll on safety concerns and statistics of crime. As news journalists choose and gather information, they rely on a “traditional set of professional norms” that are subject to the concepts of newsworthiness and result in a restricted view of the environment. By overrepresenting certain aspects of crimes and underrepresenting others, journalists create what Lippmann called the “pseudo-environment"." (Quoted from the paper)
