CCS has the potential to become one of the key transition technologies. In order to play a major role in emissions mitigation, CCS must attain commercial status by 2030, with a rapid increase in scale-up by 2050. Cuts in emissions will be more expensive without the use of CCS, and it is suggested that post-2050 it might become necessary to use CCS technologies in combination with biomass. The combination of CCS with biomass usage provides the basis for negative emissions, as the biomass absorbs CO2, and when this CO2 is released from the combustion process it is captured and stored, meaning that the whole process is theoretically CO2 negative.
